3–4 Weeks Out (Now)

  • Confirm lease start date & which utilities are included
  • Set up electricity (Duke Energy), water/sewer & gas in your name for lease-start
  • Schedule internet install — August windows fill fast
  • Buy renter's insurance & save proof (many leases require it)
  • Activate your CATS All-Access pass with your charlotte.edu email

1–2 Weeks Out

  • File USPS change of address; update university, bank, employer
  • Confirm you're in the resident & package-locker system with your exact unit format
  • Coordinate shared items & utility-splitting with roommates
  • Confirm move-in time, parking & any elevator/loading reservation

Move-In Day

  • Before unpacking, photo & video every room with the date visible
  • Complete the move-in inspection form & keep your own copy (your NC deposit evidence)
  • Pack a first-night box: bedding, toiletries, chargers, meds, a few dishes

First Week

  • Back up your dated move-in photos somewhere safe
  • Find trash/recycling day, the mail & package area, and how to file a maintenance request

North Carolina Deposit Tip

  • Your dated move-in photos are the single best way to get your deposit back — NC has no fixed legal definition of "normal wear and tear," so in a dispute the evidence decides it (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 42-51 & § 42-52).
  • After move-out, a landlord has 30 days to return your deposit or send an itemized written list of deductions.
